Abstract

Product management has a long-established history in consumer goods industry, yet it remains one of the most obscure areas of brand management. However, as global manufacturing organizations increasingly adopt external cloud-based solutions, they face challenges in applying appropriate frameworks to manage their evolving internal or external "digital products." Simultaneously, manufacturing leaders are restructuring their organizations to align with human-centered values, agile methodologies, and fluid operating principles. In this technological and philosophical change context, product management is now recognized as a valuable process that complements current trends. This paper examines traditional theories and characteristics, explores the operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) challenges associated with adopting product management processes, and proposes an internal digital product management framework, integrating new and existing approaches and principles.

Introduction

Operating within the manufacturing industry in a global economy presents numerous challenges. With the advent of smart factories, autonomous systems, machine learning, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), the "Digital Factory" concept has become a reasonable limit and industrial archetype of manufacturing (Gregor et al., 2015). In addition, the dynamic changes in the world economy are driving manufacturing leaders to restructure their organizations to prioritize speed and adaptability. These efforts aim to achieve higher levels of digital maturity, enhance business agility, and improve operational performance (McDowell et al., 2017).
